Desktop (with registry-hacked right click menu shown)
[attach=c45c2ef1f1732566]
Bottom bar with sections opened
[attach=7df75b395d3bbc81]

Alright, basic stuff first.
My desktop can be found here.
I'm using the Ka7ana Stealth theme, here.
Excluding the weather icons in my Samurize config, all icons are from the Token icon pack.
And finally, my start orb is the steelOrb.

As for programs:
I'm using the Enigma skin for Launchy, and the Statica EN skin for Rainlendar.
Running happily and silently in the background is my own AutoHotkey script.
I'm using a cutom CD Art Display skin, that I based on the default skin.

I've chosen Samurize over Rainmeter, because for me, putting together a good-looking Samurize config is relatively easy, and I like being able to dock my config. No love lost for Rainmeter, however, I just prefer Samurize.
I've created a series of custom configs for it. The main one is the bar visible in the top screenshot. It displays some basic info, including system and network info, as well as weather. It also has a few buttons on the right for various folders and other actions. The inovative part of this desktop, however, are the expanded sections in the second screenshot. Sitting in a hidden folder on the desktop are a series of shortcuts and small AutoHotkey scripts, which allow me to click parts of the main bar config, and open the smaller configs pictured above. For instance, clicking the System section of the bar opens a small window that displays the used space on 3 drives, more information about my memory and CPU usage, as well as uptime and processes. Down at the other end, clicking the bookmark icon opens a small menu of bookmarks, etc.

As a result, I have a very simplistic desktop, but with a click or two can access any information I need about my system, or the world around me.

PS: Yes, that is an apocalypse countdown clock on the bar. XD

Other
The weather is a windows 7 gadget.
The Skin for rocketdock is Vivid by Troyenne. [link]
And Finally the icons are called Token made by brsev. [link]

*.ini are in here, its a bit of a mess but I've tried to tidy it up for you and add some instructions:

http://rapidshare.com/files/395829489/TF2.rar.html

So enjoy!

In other news I now have created a MK2 version, this time with a little bit more, and a lot more moving bars.

I tried to get the teleporter exit to show weather as suggested but I couldn't get the weather to work through my colleges internet filter :(, so I've used it for uptime instead! The clock took ages, and then I found the solution was really simple so I've managed that, with a fixed minute hand and only the hour and moving, but the clock does of course run clockwise instead of anti-clockwise (like in tf2!).
The health now actually moves up and down with the cpu meter (I found how to use a variable percentage of an image instead of a solid colour). The dispenser has also changed, now looking much more like in game and also showing me a bar with free space on C:
The health of the sentry I originally wanted as InSpeed for my network but I could only get it to register either a 1 or a 0, so no continual scale.... :( , instead it shows free space on f:

Thanks for the suggestion, about the dynamic meters!

A new annotated version is available too:

Of course, what you could try is to make the health meters on the left of the sentry/dispenser/teleport dynamic progress bars showing the free space, or memory use or whatever. I presume Rainmeter allows it.

As I've never really used samurze I couldn't really compare the two. Rainmeter is fairly simple once your used to it and it's not to tricky, yet it does get fiddely when you what you want to actually create your own stuff rather than pick choose and move other peoples.

Normally I stick to a cleaner theme, but this time I wanted to stick to the TF2 HUD. I use my c:\ drive a lot more than the other two, which are largly stores. I would rather have them together, so I might move it! Thanks.

A little busy for my liking but good use of all the different parts. Of course this desktop is made for you and you know what's what but my thoughts are that things aren't obvious at first glance. Also, having free disk space spread with c: getting the left and the others on the bottom, I'd usually keep 'em together. But like I said, it's made to fit your desktop.

I've never really got the hang of Rainmeter, I'm more of a Samurize man but everything seems quite outdated for that. Is Rainmeter as fiddly as it seems at first glance?

Hello all,
This was the result of my first full go at rainmeter (own configs+own wallpaper) obviously its based on Team Fortress 2.
I thought I'd post it up just to get some thoughts, I'd be grateful for any input!

[attach=c4a359d93494f330]

Yes you will need rainmeter, this is the program that these skins 'plug in' to. Rainmeter is not the easiest application to learn but its worth the effort, you can create some truly beautiful things with it.

Hello... I think that desktop is amazing, and while I think it would be tacky to plagiarize the look, cool as it is, I would like to create something as beautiful and useful. But I seem to be missing something... I've downloaded Icy Undertow, SimpleMeter and Yboris' ToDo List Skin. But when I unpack the 2 apps I simply get configuration files which I'm unfamiliar with.

Do I need to download Rainmeter to manipulate those files & configure them to go onto the wallpaper? What am I missing here? A little help for a noob plz.

Thanks!

Thanks for the comments :)

@alexward: Yeah, I didn't really get into LS until I saw some of the screenshots from Imrik/Naalo/Novoo

@jitsejan: Sadly, Litestep doesn't support the functions of the win7 taskbar :( (no window previews or anything fancy like that). Hopefully a future update of the program will bring added functionality to take advantage of the stuff that Win7 lets you do.

Looks great. I didn't know Litestep. Any idea if it possible to replace the taskbar but keep the functionality of Windows 7?

This is my current desktop, it has taken a long time for it to evolve into this.
All of it is rainmeter. My taskbar is at the top, set to auto-hide.

Screenshot

Okay here we go, all the things that make up my desktop.

Wallpaper: Weave By MrAnkaku (me)

Themes that I took from:
- C: Drive bar (lower left)
- iTunes art display (right sidebar)
- Right sidebar backdrop
- Lifehacker RSS box (right sidebar)

Darkstep 1.0 by r3ginald
- System gauge (left side)
- Top and bottom taskbar
- Battery icon (top taskbar)
- Google box (top taskbar)
- System info (top taskbar)
- Time & date (bottom taskbar)
- Trash button (top taskbar)
- Current network (bottom taskbar)
- Available networks (left)
- Weather box (left)

Enigma (included with rainmeter)
- Clock (right sidebar) Note: the clock part is just covered by the larger clock. It is just used to the time and date
- Network address (lower left)
- Uptime (lower left)

VAtch clock (right sidebar) by GeorgeHarrison

You may notice that I have a couple of the same things in different forms. I put those because often I have a window covering part of the desktop and having it in more than one place makes it easier to see things that I often look at.

I wrote this at 3:30 AM so it may not be completely clear. If you see any mistakes please say so. Also, I look forward to hearing what you think of my desktop.

We all have our priorities - for me my desktop is something that helps set my mood - along with my music/podcast selection and a few other things, and since I AM a designer by trade, aesthetics are more important to me. That being said, it sounds like this works well for you, and that's what being a productive geek is all about! The Portal desktop adds some great geek cred - although I'd suggest tossing up an orange portal somewhere - maybe sandwich your calendar between them, and have the figure falling straight down, in an "infinite loop" ala the terminal velocity award in Portal. Then again, I'm not one to use a stock wallpaper without modifying it...so I may be overanalyzing that. Overall, very functional, if a bit spartan on the design side. Cheers!

Apparently pages don't stretch. Oh well!

There's a lot to be said for just simple, plain text (Calibri 12pt) on a mostly white background. It's informative, readable, nothing fancy, and doable for people such as myself - that sector of humanity with almost no artistic talent at all :)
OS is Windows 7, taskbar on the side to make a little better use of the whole "Widescreen Monitor" thing.
Text embedded into the desktop with Serious Samurize, which has a lovely GUI editor that, IMO, makes it much easier to use than rainmeter. Text is generated using Python, one of my favourite languages -ever- (Indeed, writing the timetables to files is launched by a silent python scheduler I wrote just for occasions like this), and features my college timetable - always useful to know.

We simply couldn't forget AutoHotKey, either! My 1420-line script makes using my PC one heck of a lot easier, controlling everything from my media player (Foobar 2000) to my web browser (Firefox), to simple window manipulation (Moving, resizing, closing, so on). An absolute godsend.

Another point (That I'm -slightly- guilty about) is the lovely Powershell script I found a good while ago that "excludes" processes from aero peek, allowing me to see samurize through it. I'll link to it, but if the author happens to come across this and would rather I didn't, they only have to ask.

Overall, my desktop was made to simplify my daily life. Not to look pretty (Though IMO it's not that bad), but simply to be -useful-. And I think it does that quite well.
