Well this is my Desktop Setup which I made a few days ago, it is a combination of:

Customized dESATURATED Windows 7 theme by Redmile (Thats makes the window borders like below)

The Lime Light wallpaper by Matchstick

Rainmeter with 10-Foot HUD and the integrated RSS Reader (which is set to fade in when moused over). Edit: I forgot to mention that I have tweaked the 10-Foot HUD clock a bit, I changed the font and distances between the time and date a bit to look good with the other font, I included that one in the attachments, just rename the .txt file extension to .ini

Launchy with the Minimalaunchy skin.

I also use Autohotkey with some scripts to control iTunes from anywhere and I also use the CapsLock remapping script from LifeHacker.

This is what my first experiences with Rainmeter have lead me to so far. It's a work in progress, but most things I do usually are. Most of the skins are based around the GeoSans 2.0 Skin by gberger. I'm using his skins for the drive icons, and have modified a few others to use the GeoSans font, which I've come to love. Other skins used include:

- SimpleMeter V1.02 by Chewtoy. I modified his clock setup pretty heavily to fit my needs.

- Yboris' ToDo List Skin from yboris. Again, modified heavily to fit the theme. The font used here is Eight One by =glue, another nice font.

- The default Enigma RSS Reader skins. There are four of them used total - one for HowToGeek, one for ProductiveGeek, one for Lifehacker, and one for a basketball blog. They're all customized to use the Eight One font and are set to a high transparency, fading in when I mouse over them.

- A custom built date skin, again using the GeoSans font set.

I also modified the icons of my pinned Taskbar programs to a set called Token by brsev in order to stick with the subdued color theme. The wallpaper used is Icy Undertow from TheReal7.

I'm pretty happy with it so far. It's more minimal than I'm used to, which is nice. I use a fair amount of Autohotkey scripting to allow me to use the keyboard for mostly everything. I built a quick script to let me easily add a task to the ToDo list using an Input Box and the FileAppend command, making adding a task very quick. The next thing I want to do is change the start button to a darker one, as I feel it kind of stands out right now.

I'd love to hear your opinions and suggestions, though. What do you think?

~ Optimus

Desktop (with registry-hacked right click menu shown)
[attach=c45c2ef1f1732566]
Bottom bar with sections opened
[attach=7df75b395d3bbc81]

Alright, basic stuff first.
My desktop can be found here.
I'm using the Ka7ana Stealth theme, here.
Excluding the weather icons in my Samurize config, all icons are from the Token icon pack.
And finally, my start orb is the steelOrb.

As for programs:
I'm using the Enigma skin for Launchy, and the Statica EN skin for Rainlendar.
Running happily and silently in the background is my own AutoHotkey script.
I'm using a cutom CD Art Display skin, that I based on the default skin.

I've chosen Samurize over Rainmeter, because for me, putting together a good-looking Samurize config is relatively easy, and I like being able to dock my config. No love lost for Rainmeter, however, I just prefer Samurize.
I've created a series of custom configs for it. The main one is the bar visible in the top screenshot. It displays some basic info, including system and network info, as well as weather. It also has a few buttons on the right for various folders and other actions. The inovative part of this desktop, however, are the expanded sections in the second screenshot. Sitting in a hidden folder on the desktop are a series of shortcuts and small AutoHotkey scripts, which allow me to click parts of the main bar config, and open the smaller configs pictured above. For instance, clicking the System section of the bar opens a small window that displays the used space on 3 drives, more information about my memory and CPU usage, as well as uptime and processes. Down at the other end, clicking the bookmark icon opens a small menu of bookmarks, etc.

As a result, I have a very simplistic desktop, but with a click or two can access any information I need about my system, or the world around me.

PS: Yes, that is an apocalypse countdown clock on the bar. XD

This was the result of my first full go at rainmeter (own configs+own wallpaper) obviously its based on Team Fortress 2.
I thought I'd post it up just to get some thoughts, I'd be grateful for any input!

This is my Mac Pro Work desktop. Honestly, I can't remember where I found the desktop background. Update: A.Nonymous found it for me - thanks!! Get it here. For the desktop functionality, I'm using Geektool for most of it, which is just several shell scripts running at the desktop level. It has integrated daily calendar items, date, weather (including icon) most recent twitter post, and hard drive and trash info. I modified the dock to be an ipod touch theme at the system level, using custom icons I gathered from a lot of sources, and a custom dock background I designed myself. The itunes display/controller is called Bowtie, and I'm using a custom theme I did myself, based on the "Geeky 2.0" theme by Laurent Baumann.

Here are the links for Geektool and Bowtie:

http://projects.tynsoe.org/en/geektool/
http://bowtieapp.com/

Like I indicated, the majority of the customization is done through geektool. Here are the geektool shell scripts I use, for those interested:

iCal daily events (this also requires installation of iCalbuddy)

/usr/local/bin/icalBuddy -nc eventsToday | sed -e "s/*/--/" | sed -e "s/!/!!/"

Weather icon (This requires two geektool modules - one that is invisible to contain the shell, and another that contains the icon png that is retrieved by the shell. Remember to use a SHELL module for the shell, and an IMAGE module for the image).
Invisible Shell script:

curl --silent "http://weather.yahoo.com/united-states/idaho/-12793714/" | grep "forecast-icon" | sed "s/.*background\:url(\'\(.*\)\')\;\ _background.*/\1/" | xargs curl --silent -o /tmp/weather.png

Weather Icon:

file:///tmp/weather.png

Day of the week:

date "+%A" | tr '[a-z]' '[A-Z]'

Real-time Weather (remember to enter your local yahoo weather id into the script by going to weather.yahoo.com, entering your zip code into the search tool, and then clicking on the "RSS" button - the local id will be reflected in your local rss URL, like in this example "feed://weather.yahooapis.com/forecastrss?p=USIL0228&u=f"

Two Day forecast Again, remember to enter your yahoo weather id here:

curl --silent "http://xml.weather.yahoo.com/forecastrss?p=YOURLOCALID&u=f" | grep -e "Forecast:" -A 2 | tail -n 2 | sed -e 's/<br \/>//' -e 's/<BR \/>//' | sed "s/\(.*\)\.\ \(.*\)/\1\?\2/" | tr "?" "\n" | sed "s/High\:\ \(.*\)\ Low\:\ \(.*\)/\?H\: \1\ L\:\ \2/" | sed "s/\?\(.*\)/\\1/"

Twitter feed This uses another utility called twitterbuddy, which needs to be installed beforehand. Be sure to use version 0.4.4 of the gem, for assorted reasons the newer versions are inconsistent at best. Here's a good explanation of the installation process.

Hard Drive space (Total, used and remaining):

This is my current desktop, it has taken a long time for it to evolve into this.
All of it is rainmeter. My taskbar is at the top, set to auto-hide.

Screenshot

Okay here we go, all the things that make up my desktop.

Wallpaper: Weave By MrAnkaku (me)

Themes that I took from:
Arachnid in Black by r3ginald
- C: Drive bar (lower left)
- iTunes art display (right sidebar)
- Right sidebar backdrop
- Lifehacker RSS box (right sidebar)

Darkstep 1.0 by r3ginald
- System gauge (left side)
- Top and bottom taskbar
- Battery icon (top taskbar)
- Google box (top taskbar)
- System info (top taskbar)
- Time & date (bottom taskbar)
- Trash button (top taskbar)
- Current network (bottom taskbar)
- Available networks (left)
- Weather box (left)

Enigma (included with rainmeter)
- Clock (right sidebar) Note: the clock part is just covered by the larger clock. It is just used to the time and date
- Network address (lower left)
- Uptime (lower left)

VAtch clock (right sidebar) by GeorgeHarrison

You may notice that I have a couple of the same things in different forms. I put those because often I have a window covering part of the desktop and having it in more than one place makes it easier to see things that I often look at.

I wrote this at 3:30 AM so it may not be completely clear. If you see any mistakes please say so. Also, I look forward to hearing what you think of my desktop.

Apparently pages don't stretch. Oh well!

There's a lot to be said for just simple, plain text (Calibri 12pt) on a mostly white background. It's informative, readable, nothing fancy, and doable for people such as myself - that sector of humanity with almost no artistic talent at all :)
OS is Windows 7, taskbar on the side to make a little better use of the whole "Widescreen Monitor" thing.
Text embedded into the desktop with Serious Samurize, which has a lovely GUI editor that, IMO, makes it much easier to use than rainmeter. Text is generated using Python, one of my favourite languages -ever- (Indeed, writing the timetables to files is launched by a silent python scheduler I wrote just for occasions like this), and features my college timetable - always useful to know.

We simply couldn't forget AutoHotKey, either! My 1420-line script makes using my PC one heck of a lot easier, controlling everything from my media player (Foobar 2000) to my web browser (Firefox), to simple window manipulation (Moving, resizing, closing, so on). An absolute godsend.

Another point (That I'm -slightly- guilty about) is the lovely Powershell script I found a good while ago that "excludes" processes from aero peek, allowing me to see samurize through it. I'll link to it, but if the author happens to come across this and would rather I didn't, they only have to ask.

Overall, my desktop was made to simplify my daily life. Not to look pretty (Though IMO it's not that bad), but simply to be -useful-. And I think it does that quite well.

It doesn't look like a lot, but hidden under all that is Microsoft Office 2010, Adobe CS4 suite, and a lot of applications that are used on our network. I spend a lot of my time in remote sessions to servers as well so I don't get nice desktop pictures all the time.

I greatly enjoyed Dragon Age: Origins, a multi-platform RPG game developed by Bioware. It was released in November 2009 on PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 and received significant praise from critics. Whether you're a fan of the genre or a newcomer to RPGs, you should definetely check it out.

I wanted a simple, clean Dragon Age themed desktop, and this is what I came up with:
[attach=4bfd84c6840fed4a]

I got the wallpaper off of the official Dragon Age: Origins website (here's a link to the 1600x1200 version, they have it in different resolutions). As you can see, it has several logos on it and some text. I didn't want that, so I removed those elements with the help of Photoshop's healing tools (Healing Brush Tool and Patch Tool). I don't know of any free image editing programs that have similar tools. Without the logos and text, there's more white space, useful for people who use icons.

For the time and date I'm using Rainmeter with a modified version of the 10-Foot HUD skin. I changed the font, it's called Morpheus and I think it looks pretty good, some x and y coordinates, font size and colors (if you want the exact color codes: 157, 0, 0 for time; 140, 0, 0 for date; 100, 0, 0 for month; and 70, 0, 0 for day - these are all shades of red).

I don't have any icons on my desktop. To launch programs, I use the multimedia keys on my keyboard and Launchy, with the Enigma skin.

I also use a little program called TaskBar Hider which, as its name implies, hides the Windows taskbar. I can still access the start menu by hitting the WIN key on my keyboard.

Here's my first crack at Desktop Mods.

I used GeekTool for the majority of the mod.
For the iTunes player in the corner I used BowTie with the Zukunft theme.

This is my machine that I use mainly for homework or just general web browsing. I'm not as concerned about things like Rainmeter taking my horsepower away from gaming since I don't really do much gaming on this machine. It's usually on a dual screen setup with Outlook running on my second monitor (a small 15") and the main screen (the one you see) as is or with a browser on it. Right now I've got it set as a dark blue for the taskbar/titlebar/etc. I'd like to have the taskbar be a light gray and keep the rest of it blue. If anyone knows how to do that let me know.
