Once you go Mac...

Glad to hear you found a solution - hackintoshes are great and all, but I'm very partial to Mac hardware. Not because and of the components are anything unique, but because of the attention to design detail. I'm very much a design geek, and a sucker for aesthetics and the "ooooh shiny" factor. Couple that with industry-leading product quality and I'm hooked. I have even have a hard time running dual Acers on my Mac Pro when there are such beautiful Cinema Displays out there...what I wouldn't give for dual 24s or even a couple of the glorious 30s...*drool* Apple fanboy? Guilty as charged. Apple sees suckers like me coming a mile away...

Current Valve rumors are apparently true, Valve is even releasing some nice wallpapers for it. Also, I ended up selling my G5. I used the cash to buy a Mini 10v and I hackintoshed it, turns out I missed OSx a bit.

I think my other problem with Mac might be the fact that I like tweaking every aspect of my computer to fit my needs just so. Apple seems to have a lock down on what you can and can't do with the OS. Or maybe that's just my lack of experience with OSx talking?

Speaking to this, there's tons you can do to tweak a mac. Just take a look at my desktop. As far as what to do with your Mac going forward, you're SOL for upgrading after a certain point, because 10.6 (Snow Leopard) is an intel-only OS, so your Power PC isn't compatible, no matter how powerful it may be. That being said, Leopard (or even Tiger) is a very competent OS that you should still be able to get quite a bit of use out of. I keep coming back to Macs because of the stability they offer and my own familiarity (and love for) the OS. It's all relative, so if you're willing to sacrifice a bit of an adjustment period, I'd say use it for whatever you want, it sounds like a good computer. Except for gaming - there's generally crap for games on Macs. (Current Valve rumors sound promising though...)

My best technique is to sync events from between Entourage and iCal, and then put all my Google Calendar info into iCal. I do this mostly because my central calendar isn't in Entourage, it's on my iPhone, but it works just fine. Go into Entourage prefs, chose the "sync services" option, and check the box next to "Synchronize events and tasks with iCal and .Mac". Then never touch Entourage's calendar again - just use iCal.

I believe that Apple could have made the iPad much much better function wise and connectivity wise. But they just had to make a device that isn't so much different than the iPhone. (Of course it's difference can be seen when the dimensions are compared ;) ) .. NO for iPad. :)

Exactly. And I don't want to carry around two computers. A slate style tablet for taking notes that require strange characters or graphs and a regular laptop for note taking. But, if I'm gonna get a swivel tablet I'd need an uber responsive one or I don't think I'd be satisfied.

Personally, I don't like this whole "slate computer" trend that's starting to pick up all of a sudden. If I were to ever get a tablet I'd like one of the traditional swivel style ones. I'm actually looking for one now, but I think for my price range ($400-$500) there just isn't anything with the responsiveness I'd like. The EeePC T91 looks close, but I'm really not set on the processor choice for it, they went with the lower clocked Atom processor for some reason, probably price. The touch screen would be really nice for my class that requires I draw a lot of graphs but still want to type my regular notes.

I actually think it's a great product, just not for the kind of people who are likely hanging out on a site called 'productivity geek'. I don't doubt that my mom and all her friends who spend a lot of time on the couch casually browsing the web will get one and love it.

But, as a tool to do work on, I don't see it for me or any of my clients.

@vtzete0
That's the problem. The iPad is not worth the $500-$800 for what it provides. The iPad would be a better experience for casually browsing the web while lying on the couch or a similar situation. The problem is, for much cheaper a netbook is not much worse a solution (plus it's useful in more situations) and if you already have an iPod Touch/iPhone (which most people have one or the other) then there even less justification for an iPad. Apple is trying to bridge the made up gap between portable device (iPod) and somewhat less portable device (Macbook/laptop). Unfortunately, there isn't much of a market for something somewhat more portable than a laptop but not quite as portable as an iPhone.

I might be in the minority here :-) I would love to have the iPad as a living room piece when I watch TV instead of having my laptop.

Although I can do all the things with either my iPhone or laptop, thought the experience would improve over both devices. I guess the question is that if $500 to $830 is worth that improved experience.

This could have been pretty cool if they'd actually innovated something, but this is really a blown-up iPhone - they took the safe route IMO.
To me, the most interesting part is the $30/month no-contract 3G... hopefully that will start a trend...

Hmm, I considered file size, just seemed a bit silly, since the files didn't seem HUGE. Next time she runs into the problem, I'll check specifics on the file sizes. It's too bad if that is the case, but I suppose she could always just send it to my computer for printing, too. Thanks for the suggestion!
