I'm a multi-tasker and I've usually got multiple windows open across both my monitors, so I like to keep my desktop icon free. No major hacks here, I've got MyComputer on the taskbar along with a functional Recycling Bin. There's tutorials for those here ( http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/6916-computer-pin-taskbar.html ) and here ( http://www.techspot.com/guides/196-recycle-bin-on-windows-7-taskbar/ ). Pretty basic stuff, my background pretty much changes on a daily basis thanks to the help of a site that I can't link to, but you've probably heard of *cough* 4chan *cough*. Everything on the taskbar is pinned and they're also pinned to the start menu in the same order, a little OCD, I know.
I adopted RocketDock a year ago to replace desktop icons. My current setup keeps just a recycle bin on the desktop with applications pinned to the taskbar and all of my folders (as well as control panel, my computer and network connections) on RocketDock on the left side of the screen.
It's great because it autohides and will show up ontop of whatever app I'm working in. It's much more convenient than desktop shortcuts and doesn't use up most of my taskbar with links to folders.
I'll second RobHale's suggestion on RocketDock. Better animation - behavior and a bunch of addons to improve functionality.
I like your idea to use a desktop without icons! it looks better and brings in the from your great wallpaper.
@RobHale - why even keep the recycle bin on the desktop? You can delete stuff by pressing Delete, and I don't think I've emptied my recycle bin in 2 years, but if I wanted to I would just use the shortcut I created and hid in my C folder.
What's even better is to create a custom jumplist in Windows 7! Then you can load up a whole slew of programs into one icon on your taskbar. Even cleaner!

@akishore
That is actually pretty neat and I hadn't seen it before. At first I thought "why bother?" but then I remembered that in Win 7 64bit, the start menu Programs folder doesn't show 32bit applications - this would be a good solution.
Thanks

This should be a link to the wallpaper that seems pretty popular.
