Poll: 3DTV - Will you be getting one?

  1. There has been a lot of fuss from the TV manufacturers lately that 3DTV will be the next big thing, now whilst I totally admit that I was blown away by Avatar in 3D, there was not enough of a 'wow' factor to cope with the downsides, I'm still amazed at really good HD transfers on my blu-ray player (like wall-e for example).

I'm a complete media-geek and I always make sure I buy the latest technology but this is one technological step I won't bother taking. At least not for a while. Its just not good enough yet if you ask me.

What about you? Will you be getting a 3DTV?

  3. Not until the ones that don't need glasses appear.

I'm much more excited by OLED than 3D.

  5. 3D? Can't wait.

Don't care about wearing specs, (you're not allowed to be a geek unless you do)

Bring on the really big wall-sized screens - nah, forget the screens ...

Proper glasses/goggles that produce put a full sized virtual image in front to of you.

    * Turn your head and the image pans left/right, up/down.
    * "Walk" through the image.

    Can't wait.

(Um, forget the sports though - jees, who cares?)

  7. Ohh man, 3D TV is going to be awesome...I'm also waiting for 3D gaming on my TV! The Playstation 3 will get it first and it sounds pretty neat.

  8. Not really. All I can really see myself using it for is for certain movies (Return of the King and Children of Men would be great for this), I'm not into sports, and I don't want to watch the news in 3D.

And at that, only if there's an option to turn it off. With the current technology, my eyes would turn into a tiny shriveled mass if I watched 3D video all the time. But personally, I have no issue with the glasses (and my glasses have a larger than average frame too).

Like RobHale though, I'm much more excited with OLED screens at the moment for its potential both in energy efficiency and platform flexibility (like walls haha), not to mention color quality. I'd love having an OLED screen for watching something like Avatar (and in general) with all the nighttime scenes and exotic bioluminescent flora.

  9. I really liked Avatar in 3D, but I don't think the headaches would be worth it. Besides, I didn't really see that much in Avatar that got me pumped for 3D everything. I think it'll be a trend that fades out pretty fast, personally. Especially if there are more people like me who get pounding headaches after a 3D movie. Just imagining watching everything in 3D makes me want to get my Tylenol out.

  11. I think thats the main issue for me... the fact that you either have to wear glasses or be at a particular angle and distance for it to work.

On top of that the image doesnt seem as sharp as HDTV although maybe thats just my perception of it. I DO love the idea in theory but for me watching a film/tv show is a social experience, if I cant enjoy what i'm watching with my friends or family I don't really see the point.

  12. Im not a fan of buying 1st gen technology to begin with, and this is no exception. I think its a good idea, but we just finished switching to HD not too long ago. Its another big leap to 3d, and it still has its problems. Give it some time and it'll be everywhere, hopefully sans eyewear...

I'm content to wait. I think I'm more excited about other technological advances at the moment anyways.

  13. Don't really watch normal TV enough to care about 3D TV. I am more looking forward to Augmented Reality as it has much more useful application.

  14. I love the idea of 3D TV! Don't really care about the glasses as well, but that is because I can watch TV without my prescription reading glasses. I would say give it a few quarters then we will see prescription 3D glasses on the market.
Gizmodo ran an article on these glasses: http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2010/01/gunnar-optiks-3d-glasses-keep-you-looking-fresh-in-the-year-of-3d/

    Looks OK.

After TV revolutionised 3D, it would be time for PS3 and PC games. I know there are a few out already, but I can do without the "Don't play more than 2 hours" warnings.
